We are in the middle of an epidemic that is cutting into everyone’s success. Chances are you have suffered from this problem at least a dozen times throughout your life and will again. Care to take a guess at what this horror might be? The answer is not living in the present. People are stuck either living in the past or worrying about their future, but rarely are they in the present. Time and time again I’ve seen people let life and most importantly opportunity pass them by because they aren’t in the present. How will someone ever be able to reach their goals and potential if they aren’t even there most of the time? I’ve helped people achieve their dreams for years now and have seen what major changes being in the now can bring to someone. If you want to be ready to capture the moment, you need to follow these simple steps I’m going to lay out for you.
Focus on your present
If you want to live in the present this should go without saying. You need to be here, ready to take advantage of the time you have. It doesn’t matter if you are sitting on the couch relaxing or driving to the most important meeting of your life, you need to be in the moment. How are you going to make power moves if you are thinking about what happened years ago or what’s going on next weekend? Never let yourself be distracted from the present. If you aren’t there, the opportunities life throws at you are going to fly by and be taken by someone else. Focusing on the present isn’t just about being in the now, it’s about investing in your future.
Let go of the past
The present is the now but sometimes the past just won’t let you leave. There are a number of reasons you could find yourself stuck in the past. Perhaps you haunted by past mistakes or are shackled to regrets and dream of what could have been. All I have to say about that is if you want to be a success, stop. The past is gone and nothing can change that. No matter how much you wish you could go back and do it all over, you can’t. So why are you worrying? You will never be able to fully take advantage of your present if you are in the past. Let go and allow yourself to watch the past sail away as you make the power moves that will give you the future of your dreams.
Conquer anxieties of the future
Just as you can’t live in the past, you can’t be worrying about your future if you want to be in the moment. Now I’m not telling you not to worry about stuff that has yet to come, planning ahead is important. What I am talking about is unrealistic worries or unhealthy anxiety about events that are yet to be determined. You can’t focus on improving your game now if you are worried about if you’ll fail in the heat of the moment. Fearing for the future only distracts you from what you are doing. Do you think Tom Brady was afraid he would lose in the middle of training for his first Super Bowl? No, he was focused on his training and now a winner of 6 Super Bowls. Be like Tom Brady and put your worries for the future aside.
Keep yourself busy
There is no better way to stay in the here and now than being busy. Do you think Bill Gates is worried about mistakes of the past or what might happen months down the road when going through his day? A busy mind is a mind in the moment. Your attention is valuable and unless you are going to devote it to what you are doing, then you are wasting time and effort. When you always have somewhere to go or something to do, your mind won’t be tempted to drift and wonder leaving you going through the day on autopilot. Whether you are preparing for an interview or researching the best ways to become a top wall street executive, being busy will help you stay on the right path.
You could worry about your past and future or you could be in the present. The here and now is the most important place you can be regardless of where you’ve been or where you might go. Keeping yourself busy, letting go of the past, putting aside worries of the future, and focusing on your present are all guaranteed ways you can be in every moment. Life isn’t going to wait for you to be ready when it decides to throw you a homerun. If you aren’t ready then, that ball will just go to someone else. Living in the moment isn’t just great for you, it’s about investing in your success.
